History

History in Australia

The first variety of Belgian Shepherd to arrive in Australia was the Groenendael, bought in from the UK in 1974 by a syndicate in Melbourne, Victoria. These dogs were MATTHIAS OF ZELLIK (dog) and ZELLIK LUCINDA (bitch). The syndicate disbanded and the dogs were sold to Brian Fagen at Ableshep Kennels in Two Wells, South Australia late in 1974.

The Tervueren was first introduced to Australia in 1980 when Bonarba Kennels in NSW imported HEBSON DRY GINGER (dog) and DELATOR'S JULIETTE (bitch) from the UK.

Malinois were first imported in 1987 by Mr G East of NSW - a dog and a bitch.

Laekenois are the most recent arrival, coming in 1990 to NSW, imported by Jaskbar Kennels (later renamed as Lanaken Kennels). BSDCVIC Champ Show results in 1993 show Laekenois ZHALE ROGUE HERRIES (Dog CC) and ZHALE RAGGED MUFFIN (Bitch CC Best of Breed), both imported from UK and exhibited by Jaskbar Kennels. Might these have been the two original Laekenois? The first Laekenois litter born in Australia was bred by Mrs D Keech, Jaskbar, born on 11/10/91 , 4 puppies (1girl) dam: Ch. Ninouche des Ardents Fauves (Imp Bel). Sire: Ch. Oud Sabbinge Flint v Donald Of Zhale (DMK) (Imp UK)
