MIRRIBANDI HEALTH REGISTER - continually updated in house, but periodically published as time permits. If this edition is outdated, please ask, and we will move mountains to upload the freshest version ASAP.
We have been long time supporters of promoting full testing for all Belgian Shepherds before they are bred from. This legacy was handed to us by the founders of the Belgian Shepherd Dog Club of Queensland, who enacted a health testing policy at the outset of the club in 1990. Since then, health testing of Belgian Shepherds has progressed from just hip scoring, to now include elbow scoring and ACES eye testing.
At Mirribandi we opt to undertake Full DNA Breed Profiles for all our breeding dogs in addition to the Dogs Qld mandatory for registration profiles for Proof Of Parentage. In 2018 we began to Heart Certify our breeding dogs as above and beyond the standard requirement of other breeders.
We have been active in fund raising and sending cheek swabs off to research into identifying the genes responsible for Epilepsy, Exercise Induced Collapse, PPSC Star Cataracts and Addisions disease in Belgian Shepherds, and hope that our involvement in this research project is fruitful. It is our dream that DNA markers will be found for these issues, followed by commercially available DNA testing enabling wiser breeding choices to be made. Our breed is comparably healthier than other breeds and cross breeds of dogs, and we intend to enable future bloodlines to remain as genetically healthy as possible by eliminating any undesirable health traits.
If you have a pedigree Belgian Shepherd that has Epilepsy, Exercise Induced Collapse, PPSC Star Cataracts or Addisions disease, you are welcome to participate in the DNA study - contact [email protected] for details of how to participate confidentially.
If you have a pedigree Belgian Shepherd that is diagnosed with Stomach Cancer, contact us or the club at [email protected] immediately to participate in DNA analysis research project currently being undertaken in the USA.
If you have a Mirribandi bred dog that has been health tested, and the results have not yet included in the attached Health Register, please send scanned copies or photocopies of the certificates to [email protected] and we will include in the Mirribandi Health Register as well as that of the BSDCQ.
